چکیده

This paper presents a simulation test bed aimed at evaluation of relay operation under faults leading to cascading events. The test bed uses physical relays and waveforms replayed from the Alternative Transients Program (ATP) simulations. A system level tool which identifies probable cascade scenarios for the given load condition and topology is presented. These scenarios are analyzed for zone-3 misoperation on any of the overloaded lines which may lead to cascading events. The fault scenarios are simulated in ATP and the generated wave forms are used to test operation of actual relays. The relay operation evaluation has been performed using SEL 421 distance relay utilizing an open-loop transient testing simulator. The IEEE 118 bus system is used for creating test cases.

Evaluating the potential of cascading failure occurrence due to line outage in power systems by information theory method and radial base functions

In power systems, a connected topology is created to increase reliability and economic performance. Increasing dimensions of power systems on the one hand and the need to continuously monitor power systems for secure operation on the other challenge the evaluation of power system security. In such conditions, due to economic conditions and considering the fast growth of consumers in a power sys...

MTBF evaluation for 2-out-of-3 redundant repairable systems with common cause and cascade failures considering fuzzy rates for failures and repair: a case study of a centrifugal water pumping system

In many cases, redundant systems are beset by both independent and dependent failures. Ignoring dependent variables in MTBF evaluation of redundant systems hastens the occurrence of failure, causing it to take place before the expected time, hence decreasing safety and creating irreversible damages. Common cause failure (CCF) and cascading failure are two varieties of dependent failures, both l...

Cascading Effects of Common-Cause F on ailures Critical Infrastructures

One of the most challenging problems in Critical Infrastructure Protection is the assessment and mitigation of cascading failures across infrastructures. In previous research we have proposed a method for assessing the cumulative security risk of cascading threats due to multi-order dependencies between infrastructures. However, recent empirical studies indicate that common mode failures may re...

A level-1 probabilistic risk assessment to blackout hazard in transmission power systems

The blackout risk in power systems is difficult to estimate by actual probabilistic methods because they usually neglect, or do not properly consider, the dependencies between failures and the dynamic evolution of the grid in the course of a transient. Our purpose is therefore to develop an integrated probabilistic approach to blackout analysis, capable of handling the coupling between events i...

From simulation to emulation - an integrated approach for network security evaluation

We present a virtual test bed for network security evaluation in mid-scale telecommunication networks. Migration from simulation scenarios towards the test bed is supported and enables researchers to evaluate experiments in a more realistic environment. We provide a comprehensive interface to manage, run and evaluate experiments. On basis of a concrete example we show how the proposed test bed ...
